The cartography of the book

The use of mapping as an artistic strategy within book structures. This includes the conceptual appropriation of a range of mapping methodologies, intended to connect visual reading to a spatial experience of place.
The Map has an inter-textual dimension, where meaning can cross boundaries of place. The referencing of map elements are a frequent factor in Guy Begbies’ book works. Maps that often have the irregular edge or organic perimeters of the found fragment or broken shard artifact. This characteristic serves to emphasise the lack of a frame where meaning runs off the edge into an abstract void space where anything can happen.

5GB Manifesto book cover

‘Manifesto’ (GB 2014)   (cover detail)  Open Edition
A painted pamphlet book that addresses the challenge of being able to see various levels of pages at the same time with the book open or closed.
The premise behind the book content is based on a mapping engagement and alignment process. This is carried out by the viewer/reader who manipulates the layered pages to configure overlays of cut through page apertures. This enables the location/viewing of combinations of fragments of painted imagery applied at sequential page levels. These compositions change when viewed from page recto to verso. This interaction is intended to allude to a process of excavation, made in the action of viewing down through the page strata.
From the exterior of the closed book, small punched holes through the cover and down to various page levels of the book reveal dots of colour fragments from the inside content.
