Book Works made during Artists Residencies in Australia
During 2016 & 2017, Guy Begbie had the opportunity to engage in three artist residencies overseas in Australian Universities. He was an artist in residence researching & developing new works at: Cicada Press, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Canberra School of Art, Australian National University, Canberra and Queensland College of Art, Griffith Centre for Creative Arts Research, Griffith University, Brisbane.
During these residencies he produced artists books that were devised using combinations of mixed media that included: printmaking, photography & video, digital & analogue drawing, re-configured appropriated book/printed material, paper engineering, small scale casting and 3D scanning and prototyping.
These books can be opened and displayed as a freestanding, expanded and immersive structures. They can be viewed in multi configurations and also can be held in the hands for more intimate tactile reading engagement. The non-linear narrative structure of the book works alludes to mapping and a walking passage or dérive, through both natural and built architectural environments.
The books are intended to imply a sense of physical spatial containment through the transition in activating the book from a folded 2D flat object to a 3D sculptural artifact.

‘Australian Aerial Mapping Book’ (one of a series) (GB Canberra 2016)
Photostat On Stitched & Bound Appropriated Paper Based Aerial Mapping Material
Using appropriated found aerial mapping artifacts, these works investigate ways in which the book form may hold and contain a distillation of direct and imagined experience of the landscape. In the act of reading maps, one may prompt a familiar fleeting pang of recognition making a place quantifiable through recall.
The Map has an inter-textual dimension, where meaning can cross boundaries of place. The referencing of map elements are a frequent factor in Guy Begbies’ book works. Maps that often have the irregular edge or organic perimeters of the found fragment or broken shard artifact. This characteristic serves to emphasise the lack of a frame where meaning runs off the edge into an abstract void space where anything can happen.

A pair of Books/Drawings Stitched & Constructed using appropriated paper based aerial mapping material and drawing media
Using appropriated found aerial mapping artefacts, these works investigate ways in which the book form may hold and contain a distillation of direct and imagined experience of the landscape. Process driven drawing, has been led by an improvisatory book making process, where the flat sheet photo montaged aerial map has been re-configured, to open and kinetically expand out into a more multi- faceted containment of a physical space. Rendered and aperture cutting interventions have been made, to redefine scale, composition and viewing perspective
